GO GREEN

Its been alittle bit, so I'm due for a few updates.  Im in college!!! Just last week I declared my major and minor and ever sense I've loved saying it because I sound so "college".  I'm a Fashion Merchandising major with a concentration in Product Development with a minor in Environmental Studies.  Since being in college I've really discovered my passions and what gets my wheels turning, and honestly I love learning about the sustainable side of fashion.  When I talk to my friends about this they have no idea what Im talking about.  Which made me think how many people know of the sustainable fashion world?? Therefore Im here to debrief and give you a few facts whether you know it or not I still think its incredibly important.

First Ill start with probably the most prominent question, what is sustainabitly, and how can it be applied to the fashion world?"sus·tain·a·bil·i·tysəˌstānəˈbilədē/
nounnoun: sustainability
the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level.
"the sustainability of economic growth"
avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance.
"the pursuit of global environmental sustainability"" (http://www.dictionary.com/browse/sustainability)
Sustainability in the fashion world is
"Sustainable fashion, also called eco fashion, is a part of the growing design philosophy and trend of sustainability, the goal of which is to create a system which can be supported indefinitely in terms of human impact on the environment and social responsibility. It can be seen as an alternative trend against fast fashion."

The next question you might have is what is fast fashion?Fast fashion are brads that a re able to have incredible turn overs.  The clothing pieces go from drawing boards to production to the floor within weeks.  This is very ew in the fashion world because companies used to have turn over period of close to a year.  The new technology, the very cheap labor (which is another problem),and the cheap fabric allows for the very fast turnover at very low cost.  Comapies producing fast fashion are companies Im sure we've all shopped at before for example Forever 21, H&M, Zara, Urban Outfitters, and many many more.
Why is fast fashion so bad?
I won't get into the ethical issues, but fast fashion is very very bad.  It takes 1,800 gallons of water to produce blue jeans, 400 to make a white t-shirt which is alot.  To the that a step further were not just using water to make clothing but also chemicals to dye them.  ave you ever thought of the chemicals that go into your clothing and where it goes after.  Yeah... that goes into the ground severely injuring many many animals if not killing them.  The issues of the plastic in the ocean are just as harsh as chemicals on land.
What can you as the consumer do?
Personally I think as consumers we all need to get smarter with our coin.  Invest in companies that support a envirometnlay friendly message ad follow through with it.  Watch documentaries, watch videos, read articles on the very ongoing issues.

Here are just a few environmentally friendly fashion companies

Stella MCcartney ($$$)
Reformation ($$)
Alternative Apparel ($-$$)
EcoVibe Apparel ($)
Cienne ($-$$)
Cuyana($$)

These are a few good documentaries and videos
